Already today, many Rhein Chemie Additives components can be used in water-miscible metalworking fluids with the help of emulsifiers. The Additin® Water-Miscible (WM) series is designed for water-soluble and emulsifiable metalworking fluids. The series is ideally suitable for the formulation of:
- Emulsifiable, semi-synthetic as well as water-soluble metal¬working fluids
- HFC fluids
- Water-based metal cleaners and antifreeze
- In addition, several products can be used as tank-side additives
The Additin® WM range provides water-miscible additives that optimize the performance of water-miscible metal¬working fluids by enhancing lubricity and extreme-pressure characteristics as well as corrosion protection.

Water soluble metal-working fluids
Additin RC 5001

Additin RC 5001 is a water soluble additive with a high lubricity and a low foaming performance and can be used as low-foaming base fluid in HFC-fluids.

Additin RC 5010
Additin RC 5010 provides excellent lubricity performance and furthermore good EP- and AW-performance. Additin RC 5010 is used for cutting processes as well as for forming processes. Some metal working processes require total oil-free metal working fluids to optimize following cleaning and coating processes. In these applications oil-free metal working solutions with Additin RC 5010 also perform a good lubricity like common metal working emulsions and are easy to wash off. A combination of Additin RC 5010 with Additin RC 5202 increases EP-performance of fully synthetic metal working fluids (e.g. ratio 1 part Additin RC 5010 and 1 part Additin RC 5202). Furthermore Additin RC 5010 shows an effect as hydrophilic co-emulsifier.

Additin RC 5202
Additin RC 5202 is a clearly water-soluble EP-additive used for severe metal working operations with fully synthetic fluids (e.g. ironing of tins or fine wire drawing). For supporting lubricity and AW-performance a combination with Additin RC 5010 (e.g. ratio 1 part RC 5202 and 1 part RC 5010) is recommended. If Additin RC 5202 is used as tank-side-additive for metal working solutions, pay attention that lubricity additives (e.g. Additin RC 5010) are already in the solution.

Additin RC 5201
Additin RC 5201 increases the EP-performance of water miscible metal working fluids, particularly fully synthetic metal working fluids used for severe metal working operations (e.g. ironing of tins or wire drawing). Additin RC 5201 is clearly soluble in water by neutralization with inorganic alkalizing agents or alkanolamines.

Additin RC 5250
Additin RC 5250 in water-based systems displays multifunctional properties: EP-performance, lubricity, corrosion inhibition and co-emulsification.
Additin RC 5250 is emulsifiable in water by neutralization with inorganic alkalizing agents or alkanolamines. Using tap water with high hardness, a well-balanced combination with Calcium dispersants is necessary. Additin RC 5250 increases the EP-performance and lubricity during the machining of steel and light metals. A synergistic EP-performance can be achieved in emulsifiable or semi synthetic MWF in combination with Additin RC 2526 or Additin RC 2540.

Additin RC 5401
Additin RC 5401 is a synthetic corrosion inhibitor, which can be formulated in various water based metal working fluids and circulation cooling systems, designed for ferrous and nonferrous applications, which can also include aluminum based alloys. Additin RC 5401 is suitable for both soft and hard water conditions, with inherent low foaming tendencies, making Additin RC 5401 suitable for the modern day high pressured machine centres

Additin RC 5428
Additin RC 5428 itself is not oil soluble and has limited water solubility. But alkali- or aminic salts of Additin RC 5428 are water-soluble.
Alkali salts of Additin RC 5428 are suitable as corrosion inhibitor systems for amine-free formulations.
Blends of Alkanolamines and Additin RC 5428:
Alkanolamine salts of Additin RC 5428 (MEA-, TEA-, DGA-, MIPA-, AMP-salts etc) are water-soluble showing good corrosion inhibition properties with cast iron and other ferrous alloys. In addition they do not lead to any discolouration effects on aluminium. They function in mineral oil based concentrates as well as in mineral oil free, fully synthetic transparent solutions. Alkanolamine salts of
Additin RC 5428 are shear stable and hard water resistant (no build up of water insoluble Ca-/ Mg- soaps) and therefore ideally suited for water based hydraulic systems, off shore lubricants and water based coolants. They have no tendency to form sticky residues, which is a positive aspect for industrial cleaners. Furthermore they demonstrate the superior temperature stability necessary for
waterbased quenching fluids.
Additin RC 5428 is odourless and therefore an ideal additive chemistry for critical processes, such as cutting or grinding where smell could be a problem.
Should there be any tendency to foam then slight variations in the specific recipe and / or small additions of defoamers should rectify the problem.

Additin RC 5429
Additin RC 5429 is soluble in water, glycols and amino alcohols and shows good corrosion inhibition properties with cast iron and other ferrous alloys. It is applicable for mineral oil based concentrates as well as in mineral oil free, fully synthetic transparent solutions.
Additin RC 5429 is shear stable and hard water resistant (no formation of water insoluble Calcium and / or Magnesium soaps) and therefore ideally suited for water based hydraulic systems, off shore lubricants and water based coolants.

Additin RC 5800
Additin® RC 5800 protects primarily copper and cobalt, including their alloys, as well as nickel from corrosion, forming a very thin, stable and virtually colorless film on the metal surface. The formation and accumulation of copper ions in the products, e.g. cooling or heat transfer fluids, are prevented and consequently the copper ion catalyzed oxidation or degradation reactions are avoided.
Copper ions can also cause pitting on metals such as aluminium, zinc, iron and steel. Problems of this kind can be avoided by using Preventol® CI-7-50.
Additin® RC 5800 can be combined with other corrosion inhibitors, e.g. sodium benzoate, borax, silicate, nitrite, molybdate, phosphate and organic phosphorus compounds and increases their effectiveness.
Additin® RC 5800 is effective at very low concentrations. As a liquid Additin® RC 5800 offers further advantages such as ease of handling, processing, dosage and excellent solubility in glycols.
In most applications Additin® RC 5800 can be used in place of solid tolyltriazole (Additin® RC 8221). In this case the addition of Additin® RC 5800 should be approx. 2.3 times higher than the respective amount of tolyltriazole.

Additin RC 5801
Additin RC 5801 is used where corrosion and release of copper and cobalt, including their alloys, needs to be avoided. Additin RC 5801 is clearly soluble in water (max. 1 %) and can be applied in aqueous systems with a pH-value > 7.
A further area of application are greases.

Additin RC 5902
Additin RC 5902 is used for severe metal working operations with fully synthetic fluids. Additin RC 5902 provides excellent EP and high lubricity performance. Generally you have to add suitable alkalizing agents, corrosion inhibitors and biocides to the fully synthetic concentrate. According to our experience Additin RC 5902 supports the corrosion protection of copper alloys.

Additin RC 5950
Additin RC 5950 is a medium active EP-package for emulsifiable and semi-synthetic lubricants. It is suitable as well in naphthenic and paraffinic oil based lubricants. Furthermore it can be used in esterbased lubricants.
Depending on the dosage, Additin RC 5950 is suitable for light to medium duty cutting operations, e.g. milling, turning, drilling etc., on ferrous metals.
Only mixed with base oil Additin RC 5950 is not self-emulsifying when added to water. To achieve suitable emulsifiable lubricant concentrates, Additin RC 5950 is formulated in a well-blanced combination with the self-emulsifying corrosion protection package Additin RC 5970 (e.g. in a ratio 1 part Additin RC 5950 and 1 part Additin RC 5970).
Depending on quality, kind and amount of the base oil an addition of suitable emulsifiers might be necessary. The pH can be adjusted - if needed – by additions of monoethanolamine or potassium hydroxide solution.
According to our experience, yellow metals will not be discoloured concerning machine parts. In case of machining yellow metals the use of Additin RC 5800 or Additin RC 5801 is recommended; as well in MWF concentrates as for tankside addition of metalworking emulsions.

Additin RC 5951
Additin RC 5951 is a medium active EP-package for emulsifiable and semi-synthetic lubricants. It is suitable as well in naphthenic and paraffinic oil based lubricants. Furthermore it can be used in esterbased lubricants. Depending on the dosage, Additin RC 5951 is suitable for medium to severe duty cutting operations, e.g. milling, turning, drilling etc., on ferrous metals. Also light forming processes might be possible. The recommended treat level in emulsifiable MWF concentrates is generally 10 - 30 %. Only mixed with base oil Additin RC 5951 is not self-emulsifying when added to water. To achieve suitable emulsifiable lubricant concentrates, Additin RC 5951 is formulated in a well-balanced combination with the self-emulsifying corrosion
protection package Additin RC 5970 (e.g. in a ratio 1 part Additin RC 5951 and 1 part Additin RC 5970).
Depending on quality, kind and amount of the base oil an addition of suitable emulsifiers might be necessary. The pH can be adjusted - if needed - by additions of monoethanolamine or potassium hydroxide solution. According to our experience, yellow metals will not be discoloured concerning machine parts. Additin RC 5970
Additin RC 5970 is characterized by outstanding corrosion protection towards iron metals. According to our experience, yellow metals will not be discoloured concerning machine parts. Furthermore Additin RC 5970 shows excellent emulsifying properties and has a good buffer capacity, due to its well-balanced additive combination.
If used with naphthenic base oils, Additin RC 5970 forms coarse dispersed emulsions. Furthermore ester oils can be used as base fluids. In case of using paraffinic base oils additions of coupling agents are necessary. The recommended treat level of Additin RC 5970 in MWF concentrates is generally
10 - 35%.
Typically suitable biocides and antifoam agents were added to the MWF concentrate. Depending on quality, kind and amount of the base oil an Addition of suitable emulsifiers might be necessary. The pH can be adjusted - if needed
- by additions of monoethanolamine or potassium hydroxide solution.
In case of machining yellow metals the use of Additin RC 5800 or Additin RC 5801 is recommended; as well in MWF concentrates as for tankside addition of metalworking emulsions.
To formulate emulsifiable EP-lubricants the addition of well-balanced EP additives, e.g. Additin RC 5950 or Additin RC 5951, are recommended (e.g. in a ratio 1 part Additin RC 5970 and 1 part Additin RC 5950 or Additin RC 5951).
